Gambling organizers wanted<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police are searching for three men suspected of
\nrunning gambling dens on Jl.Mangga Besar, West Jakarta, police
\nspokesman Brig. Gen. I Ketut Ratta said yesterday.<\/p>\n
He identified the three men as Effendi Halim, owner of the Tio
\nCiu restaurant, and Arma and Chuan Buntung, owners of the Mawar
\nIndah bar and massage parlor.<\/p>\n
Last week a special police team raided Tio Ciu and Mawar Indah
\nafter learning that the two places were used as gambling dens.<\/p>\n
Led by Lt. Col. Jacky Uli, 50 members of the team, equipped
\nwith Stayer automatic guns and a helicopter, arrested 61 people
\nat Tio Ciu and 70 others at Mawar Indah.<\/p>\n
The people arrested were found gambling when the police
\nofficers raided the places, Ratta said.<\/p>\n
The officers took the 131 detainees to the team's headquarters
\nin Kelapa Dua, East Jakarta, in two trucks and a bus before
\nsending them to police headquarters in Kebayoran Baru, South
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
\"All of the people were arrested on suspicion of being
\ninvolved in gambling,\" Ratta said, disclosing that 52 of the
\ndetainees are waitresses who worked at the restaurant and the
\nbar.<\/p>\n
Police confiscated baccarat and roulette equipment, cards and
\ntens of millions in rupiah banknotes.<\/p>\n
Ratta denied allegations that the police had violated the law
\nduring the operation. \"All of police actions during the raids
\nwere in line with the existing procedures,\" he said without
\nelaboration.<\/p>\n
A local newspaper recently ran an article alleging that the
\npolice team had abused the people arrested at Tio Ciu and Mawar
\nIndah. The paper said the police officers acted arbitrarily to
\nthe point of resorting to violence in arresting the people there,
\nalthough some of them were not gamblers.<\/p>\n
The paper also accused the officers of damaging the two
\nbuildings and taking money.<\/p>\n
Ratta said the allegations were groundless. \"The police went
\nto the sites simply to arrest suspected gamblers and criminals.
\nWhy would they themselves commit a crime?\" Ratta asked.(29)<\/p>",
