        "content": "<p>Gambling dens vandalized<\/p>\n<p>TANGERANG (JP): More than one hundred angry residents damaged<br>\nfour stalls in Pinang subdistrict here on Sunday night as they<br>\nwere believed to have been used as gambling dens.<\/p>\n<p>The residents gathered along Jl. Hasyim Ashari in Cipondoh at<br>\nabout 7 p.m., expressing their dissatisfaction over mushrooming<br>\ngambling activities locally known as hwa-hwe.<\/p>\n<p>The people then marched to a stall near Kali Angke bridge in<br>\nPinang subdistrict that was allegedly used to sell the hwa-hwe<br>\ncoupons.<\/p>\n<p>The stall owner managed to escape upon seeing the approaching<br>\ncrowd, who later stoned and damaged the semi-permanent building.<\/p>\n<p>Another group of residents moved to another stall which was<br>\nalso believed to have been used for the same activities near<br>\nPinang Griya housing complex and a nearby stall behind Pinang<br>\nsubdistrict office. They also damaged the two facilities.<\/p>\n<p>A number of soldiers and police officers arrived at the scenes<br>\nand managed to deter the residents from moving on and damaging<br>\nother similar buildings.<\/p>\n<p>According to Asmawi, a resident of the Pinang subdistrict,<br>\nthe angry people complained about the existence of the alleged<br>\ngambling dens.<\/p>\n<p>\"If we let the gambling go on, it will ruin religious values<br>\nin the Pinang area,\" Asmawi said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the residents have complained about the gambling dens<br>\nto the local authority but they received unsatisfactory<br>\nresponses.<\/p>\n<p>Tangerang mayoralty spokesman Said Endrowiyanto insisted the<br>\nresidents' action was an expression of their anger over the<br>\ngambling dens.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the mayoralty never issued permits for the<br>\noperation of the gambling dens.<\/p>\n<p>\"We've told related parties not to give a 'green light' to<br>\ngambling dens to prevent residents from becoming angry in the<br>\nfuture,\" he added.
