Gambling den owner arrested, 70 machines seized<\/p>\n

Confirming public suspicions that gambling dens are still
\nthriving in the capital, city police arrested on Monday evening
\nan owner of a gambling den in Beruang Cafe on Jl. Hayam Wuruk,
\nCentral Jakarta and confiscated 70 gambling machines.<\/p>\n
Chief of the serious crimes unit of Jakarta Police Comr. Andry
\nWibowo said that police had arrested the owner of Cafe Beruang
\nidentified as Abdul Hadi alias Ahok and three of his employees
\nidentified as Franky Kornelis, Teddy Cahya and Irsan Alamsyah.<\/p>\n
"We arrested them following tipoffs from local residents. We
\nwill detain them here at the headquarters until we can complete
\ntheir case files. We are now bringing the machines here," Andry
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The arrest, somehow, confirmed public suspicion that gambling,
\nwhich city police claimed to have been wiped out, was still
\nthriving in the capital.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani had vowed to crack
\ndown on gambling in the city and to fire precinct and subprecinct
\npolice chiefs if there were reports of gambling dens in their
\nrespective areas after the one-week deadline.<\/p>\n
Despite Monday's arrest, Central Jakarta Police chief Sr.
\nComr. Sukrawardi Dahlan will still keep his post.<\/p>\n
National Police chief Gen. Sutanto announced a one-week
\ndeadline on July 11 for provincial police chiefs to eradicate
\ngambling in their respective areas.<\/p>\n
Firman Gani quickly ordered his top officers, precinct, and
\nsubprecinct chiefs to wipe out all gambling in the capital within
\nthree days, with the threat that failure would result in losing
\ntheir posts.<\/p>\n
More than 500 gamblers and gambling den owners were
\nimmediately arrested and thousands of gambling machines were
\nconfiscated after Gani's pledge.<\/p>\n
However, many people doubt that the police were serious in
\neliminating gambling as it is public knowledge that many high
\nranking police officers receive monthly payments from big
\ngambling bosses and lower-ranking officers also got a lot of
\nadditional income from street gambling including togel (illegal
\nlottery).<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Jakarta Prosecutor's Office announced on
\nTuesday that they had not received a single case file on gambling
\nfrom either the Jakarta or national police headquarters.<\/p>\n

\nFarried Haryanto said he has reviewed all case files submitted to
\nhis office and found none on gambling.<\/p>\n
"There are many case files received from the police but none
\nof them are on gambling," Farried told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
He said that his office should have received many gambling
\ncase files as police have arrested many alleged gamblers over the
\npast two months.<\/p>\n
"Most arrested gamblers or gambling operators were caught red-
\nhanded. So, it should be easy and quick to complete the case
\nfiles," he said.<\/p>\n
Earlier, an officer at city police headquarters said that some
\npolice officers had released many alleged gamblers for cash.<\/p>",
