Gambling backers disclosed<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Bogor administration spokesman Yus Herdiyus
\ndisclosed to media on Monday that five local officials allegedly
\nbacked activities in a gambling den at Jl. Siliwangi No. 23D
\nwhich was raided by students earlier this month.<\/p>\n
He said the officials were two employees of the Bogor
\nadministration's social-political affairs office and three
\nofficials from the local Regional Development Planning (Bappeda)
\noffice, Sukasari subdistrict, East Bogor.<\/p>\n
Herdiyus, however, asked the reporters not to reveal the
\nofficials' identities to the public, requesting they comply with
\nthe principle of presumption of innocence.<\/p>\n
\"They're only thought to have been involved in the gambling
\noperations. Do not judge them, but let the legal process run
\nproperly,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The spokesman said the five had been sanctioned for their
\nundisciplinary actions as stipulated in the 1980 Government
\nDecree on civil servants.<\/p>\n
\"They have been given warning letters by the mayor, stating
\nthat they have been performing unsatisfactorily'. It's a heavier
\npunishment than receiving a written or verbal notice,\" Herdiyus
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"But if the court finds them guilty, they could be severely
\npunished ... they might be fired.\"<\/p>\n
A group of 80 students from five universities in Bogor raided
\na gambling den on Jl. Siliwangi early this month, confiscating
\nthousands of tokens and toto coupons as well as roulette table, a
\nlist of gamblers and a total of Rp 700,000 cash in two envelopes,
\naddressed to a subdistrict chief and a police officer. Their
\nfindings were later submitted to the police.<\/p>\n
Gambling is illegal in this country, but a popular game is
\njudi buntut, togel, or toto gelap, a bet based on two, three and
\nfour numbers which are released every two or three days by
\ngambling operators.<\/p>\n
Almost no gambling cases make it to court.<\/p>\n
Separately on Sunday night, 50 leaders of local student, youth
\nand mass organizations declared the establishment of the People's
\nAction Network Against Immoral Acts (Jamak) in Bogor.<\/p>\n
The group pledged to fight and eradicate social diseases such
\nas gambling, drugs and prostitution.<\/p>\n
\"We cannot just sit tight and watch drugs being distributed at
\nschools,\" Rudi Ginting, Jamak coordinator, said on Monday.<\/p>\n
They also urged the administration to pose bigger sanctions
\nagainst prostitutes by reviewing the 1990 regional decree on
\nsocial order.<\/p>\n
\"Currently a prostitute can only be charged with a maximum Rp
\n50,000 fine or a three-month imprisonment,\" Rudi said. (24\/edt)<\/p>",
