Gamblers protest police shooting<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): Hundreds of regular gamblers at cock fights in
\nCipondoh thronged the local police station on Friday, protesting
\nthe shooting of a man in a police raid earlier in the day.<\/p>\n
Inang Saputra, 51, was shot in the abdomen when police raided
\nthe gamblers' den shortly after the Friday prayer, Tangerang
\nPolice chief Lt. Col. Pudji Hartanto said.<\/p>\n
Inang was taken to Usada Insani Hospital for immediate
\ntreatment as the bullet reportedly went through his stomach.<\/p>\n
\"The raid was led by Cipondoh Police chief Capt. Sumardi and
\n10 policemen. During the operation, police had to open fire as
\nthe gamblers resisted arrest,\" Pudji explained.<\/p>\n
Although the raid was conducted based on a request from local
\nresidents of nearby Noroktok subdistrict after gambling
\nactivities disturbed them, Pudji said his office would
\ninvestigate the shooting thoroughly.<\/p>\n
\"The officer who shot Inang is being investigated by internal
\naffairs to find out what really happened,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Capt. Sumardi said, however, that he had warned his officers
\nnot to open fire.<\/p>\n
\"But there was a fight and Inang, who happened to be in charge
\nof the cocks, got shot in the fray,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Until Friday afternoon, hundreds of gamblers were still
\nsitting around the Cipondoh police station and the road near it.<\/p>\n
In a bid to calm the tension, several local community leaders
\nwent to the office and showed gratitude for the police's action.<\/p>\n
\"The people here thank the officers for having quickly
\ndispersed the people at the rooster gambling den,\" Sumardi, a
