        "content": "<p>GAM makes people ignorant<\/p>\n<p>From Koran Tempo<\/p>\n<p>Around 1,000 school buildings in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam have<br>\nbeen destroyed by the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM),<br>\nforcing over 50,000 students to continue their lessons in<br>\ntemporary classrooms, even outdoors. Dozens of teachers have also<br>\nbeen threatened by GAM to stop classes.<\/p>\n<p>Before the military operation was launched against the<br>\nseparatists in Aceh, more than 100 schools had already been<br>\nburned down by GAM. One of the arsonists seized in Mee Pangwee<br>\nvillage, Trieung Gading district, Pidie regency, admitted that<br>\nthe arson was carried out as ordered by the local GAM commander,<br>\nwith a compensation of Rp 200,000 per school.<\/p>\n<p>The arson, he said, was meant to destroy the future of the<br>\nAcehnese, because without education, they would be left ignorant<br>\nand easier for GAM to control and exploit the resource-rich<br>\nprovince.<\/p>\n<p>GAM's aim to make the people uneducated and ignorant certainly<br>\ngoes against the wishes of the Acehnese, who want their children<br>\nto be educated and so lead a better life.<\/p>\n<p>GAM's actions must not be tolerated and the local people must<br>\njoin hands to eliminate the separatist group.<\/p>\n<p>ABDUL HAMID<br>\nYogyakarta<\/p>",
