GAM intimidates the people<\/p>\n

The government has adopted a new policy to settle the question
\nof Aceh. Psychologically, the Acehnese are still gripped with
\nfear.<\/p>\n
When Aceh was still a military operation zone, the Acehnese,
\ndespite the victims the conflict claimed, always openly sided
\nwith the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
As our intelligence and territorial operations are weak, the
\nFree Aceh Movement (GAM) has successfully intimidated the
\nAcehnese and forced them to side with GAM. The Indonesian
\nMilitary and police have found the area a really foreign
\nterritory with foreign people not siding with them.<\/p>\n
In short, GAM has psychologically controlled most elements of
\nthe Acehnese community. If this condition persists and the
\nAcehnese lose their trust in the central government, the question
\nof Aceh will become very difficult to settle.<\/p>\n
The only way out is the government's firm stance, as can be
\nconstrued from the recent statement made by the coordinating
\nminister for political and security affairs. Of course dialog is
\nstill necessary, but a deadline should be set. Indeed, dialog is
\nthe most ethical way to solve the problem.<\/p>\n
If possible, dialog should involve other social elements. If
\ndialog fails, then military law should be imposed as the last
\nresort.<\/p>\n
