GAM executes PDI-P executive<\/p>\n

Deputy chairman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle
\n(PDI Perjuangan) in North Aceh, Said Rafiq Maulana, was shot dead
\nat a checkpoint mounted by Free Aceh Movement (GAM) rebels, the
\nmilitary said on Friday.<\/p>\n
Local military spokesman Maj. Zaenal Muttaqin said Rafiq, 38,
\nwho chaired the local chapter of the National Entrepreneurs'
\nAssociation, was shot in Peudawa Panjou village, Idie Rayeuk
\ndistrict in East Aceh on his way to North Aceh's main city of
\nLhokseumawe.<\/p>\n
Rafiq was driving with his brothers, Rizal and Said Jamalus,
\nwhen they came to a checkpoint manned by armed GAM members on a
\nsection of the main road linking Banda Aceh and Medan just after
\nFriday prayer.<\/p>\n
\"There were many vehicles stopped, including a truck which had
\nalready been set on fire,\" Rizal said as quoted by Zainal.<\/p>\n
Rizal added that Rafiq refused to stop the car, prompting the
\nrebels to open fire. One of the bullets struck Rafiq.<\/p>\n
Jamalus jumped in the driving seat to take over from the
\ninjured Rafiq and sped off to the military hospital in
\nLhokseumawe. Doctors failed to save Rafiq, who died of heavy
\nblood loss.<\/p>\n
GAM spokesman Ishak Daud told The Jakarta Post that he could
\nnot confirm the killing, saying he was awaiting the details from
\nhis men in the field.<\/p>\n
Zainal said a clash between Indonesian Military (TNI) troops
\nand GAM had preceded the incident.<\/p>\n
He said the military had killed a GAM member, identified as
\nIsmail, and seized an AK-47 automatic rifle, a radio
\ncommunication device and dozens of rounds ammunitions.<\/p>",
