GAM bases raided, 12 found dead<\/p>\n
BANDA ACEH, Aceh: Indonesian military (TNI) troops claimed to
\nhave raided two main bases of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM)
\nseparatist rebel group in the village of Jiemjiem, Bandar Baru
\ndistrict, Pidie regency on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The village was believed to be the hideout of GAM commander
\nTeungku Abdullah Syafiie, the place from which he led military
\nresistance against Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Local military spokesman Lt. Col. Firdaus said on Thursday
\nthat the troops seized GAM military supplies in the raid but
\nfailed to locate GAM forces.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, at least 12 people were found dead in various
\nlocations in East Aceh, Central Aceh and Pidie, according to
\nhumanitarian activists and GAM.<\/p>\n
Rights activist Zulkarnaini said that men's bodies were found
\nover the last 10 days floating in the nearby river.<\/p>\n
\"We identified six of them as residents of Idi Rayeuk, who
\nwent missing following a joint police and military raid last
\nweek,\" Zulkarnaini said.<\/p>\n
Spokesman for the GAM in Central Aceh Wien Rimbe Raya accused
\nthe local military-trained militia members of killing two
\ncivilians and burning 59 houses there.<\/p>\n
Police spokesman Comr. Sudharsono strongly denied the charges,
