Further studies of Danish coal technology urged<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto has called for a further
\nstudies of Danish technology for clearing coal from its' sulfur
\ncontent with a view to expanding the use of coal in the country.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a presentation of Indonesia's geological map
\nyesterday, the President recounted his recent meeting the
\nvisiting Danish minister of the environment, Sven Auken, who told
\nhim that sulfur content, which causes air pollution, can be
\neliminated from coal.<\/p>\n
\"We should soon make a further study on the technology so that
\nwe can expand the use of coal,\" he said, adding that Denmark had
\nalready expressed its willingness to transfer to Indonesia the
\nenvironmental know-how.<\/p>\n
The technology, he added, will make possible a massive
\nexpansion of coal use for firing or generating electricity
\nwithout causing pollution.<\/p>\n
He noted that Indonesia is very rich in coal with estimated
\ndeposits adequate for meeting the country's needs for 100 to 200
\nyears.<\/p>\n
According to him, expanding coal usage will further support
\nthe country's policy of saving oil as much as possible for
\nexports.<\/p>\n
Soeharto added that using oil to generate power is very
\nexpensive, especially because the fossil fuel is not renewable.<\/p>\n
\"If we build more diesel power-stations we could end up
\nimporting oil in the future,\" he noted.<\/p>\n
He said the government has produced a complete geological map
\nthat shows the locations of commercially viable coal resources.<\/p>\n
Internet<\/p>\n
He suggested that the result of the geological mapping be
\nentered into the Internet to let the world, particularly
\ninvestors, know the Indonesian potential coal resources.<\/p>\n
\"We're very rich in minerals and various kinds of stones. We
\ncan sell them through the Internet,\" he noted at the
\npresentation, which was also attended by Minister of Mines and
\nEnergy I.B. Sudjana, Minister of Agriculture Sjarifudin Baharsjah
\nand Minister of the Public Works Radinal Moochtar.<\/p>\n
Minister Sudjana said that a geological mapping team concluded
\nthat Indonesia has 1,000 sedimentary basins that may hold
\nvarious kinds of minerals and precious stones, such as gold,
\nsilver and copper.<\/p>\n
He said that the geological map is very important to help
\ndesign a development masterplan. \"It tells us where we should not
\nbuild a transmigration site, where areas that are prone to
\nlandslide, earthquake and volcanic eruption are located,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He added that the Ministry of Mines and Energy has completed
\n58 geological maps of Java and Madura island, and 181 geological
\nmaps of the outer islands. (13)<\/p>",
