Amien Rais' political moves get more amusing by the day. It
\nseems that every issue has been politicized by him. Also, Amien
\nRais, who is Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly, is
\nconcerned about the detention of central bank Governor Sjahril
\nSabirin by the Attorney General's Office for his alleged
\ninvolvement in the Bank Bali scandal.<\/p>\n
Earlier this week, Amien Rais stated that he wished to see
\nAttorney General Marzuki Darusman in connection with the BI
\ngovernor's case. He hinted there was something mysterious behind
\nSjahril Sabirin's detention. Amien Rais had met with Sjahril in
\nhis detention room, so he wanted to get accurate information
\nabout the reasons behind the detention. My question is whether
\nsuch actions are proper for the Assembly Speaker.<\/p>\n
However, Amien emphasized that he by no means wanted to
\ninterfere with the attorney general's authority. That is really
\nfunny, because such a wish is not held only by Amien Rais. Bus
\ndrivers, farmers and everybody else obviously has the same
\nfeeling. But these people do not want to get a special
\nexplanation from the attorney general. So Amien Rais (confessing
\nto be a commoner) must have a special motive for moving in that
\ndirection.<\/p>\n
Certainly no other ordinary commoners can freely do things as
\nAmien Rais has done. Political observers have been watching Amien
\nRais engage in a political race against President Abdurrahman
\nWahid. It is no secret anymore that before his detention, Sjahril
\nSabirin had been on bad terms with President Abdurrahman Wahid.
\nPerhaps Amien Rais is playing the political card that states \"the
\nenemy of my opponent is my friend\".<\/p>\n
