Funds for E. Timor forests<\/p>\n
DILI, East Timor (JP): The government has earmarked Rp 10
\nbillion for forestry development in East Timor this fiscal year,
\nMinister of Forestry Djamaludin Suryohadikusumo said.<\/p>\n
Speaking to journalists after attending a ceremony on forest
\nfire control brigade here earlier this week, Djamaludin said the
\nfund was part of the government's forestry development budget.<\/p>\n
This fiscal year, the government budgets Rp 900 billion for
\nthe country's forestry development. Djamaludin explained that the
\nbudget included funds to develop industrial forest estates.<\/p>\n
When speaking at the ceremony, Djamaludin said that
\ncontrolling forest fires was the responsibility of all people,
\nincluding East Timorese.<\/p>\n
\"Although there have been no reports of fires in East Timor's
\nforests, if forests fires in western part of Indonesia cannot be
\ncontrolled, the impact can reach the eastern part of Indonesia,\"
\nDjamaludin said.<\/p>\n
Last year, forest fires destroyed more than $15.6 million
\nworth of forest estates in Sumatra and Kalimantan, with a total
\narea of destroyed forest reaching 45,620 hectares.<\/p>\n
The fires were blamed on local people using slash and burn
\nagricultural techniques as well as careless forestry companies
\nwho used fire as a means to easily clear land. (yac\/rid)<\/p>",
