        "content": "<p>Fund involvement for dam protested<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian activist groups yesterday<br>\nprotested the involvement of the national Employees Provident<br>\nFund (EPF) in financing the controversial Bakun hydroelectric dam<br>\nproject.<\/p>\n<p>\"What guarantees can the EPF give the Malaysian workforce,<br>\nshould something go wrong with the project in the future?\" asked<br>\nCynthia Gabriel, spokeswoman for non-governmental organizations<br>\n(NGOs) opposing the dam.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced Thursday that<br>\nEPF would hold a 10 percent stake in the 13.6-billion-ringgit<br>\n(US$5.44 billion) Bakun dam in the eastern state of Sarawak,<br>\nwhich will be 51 percent owned by the listed Ekran Bhd.<\/p>\n<p>The Sarawak state government will have a nine percent stake in<br>\nthe project, while the national electricity company Tenaga<br>\nNasional Bhd will hold 25 percent and the listed Malaysia Mining<br>\nCorp Bhd the remaining five percent.<\/p>\n<p>Ekran had earlier dismissed the need to use the national<br>\nworkers' fund to finance the project.<\/p>",
