FUG discusses fate at MPR<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: In an attempt to gather the views of politicians,
\nexperts and the public, the Interest Group Faction (FUG) at the
\nPeople's Consultative Assembly (MPR) organized on Monday a panel
\ndiscussion on the composition of the Assembly.<\/p>\n
The discussion was held with the aim of gathering input ahead
\nof the Annual Session on Nov. 1, in which lawmakers will remove
\nfactions.<\/p>\n
Although Article 2 (1) of the Constitution states that the
\nAssembly comprises House members, regional representatives and
\ninterest groups, a draft amendment scheduled to be carried out on
\nNov. 1 will stipulate that the Assembly comprises House members,
\nmembers of the regional legislature and representatives of
\nsociety.<\/p>\n
Political expert Maswadi Rauf agreed with the omission of
\nfactions, saying they would only create conflict among the
\ninterest groups.<\/p>\n
But senior lecturer Dahlan Ranuwiharjo suggested that the
\ncurrent composition be maintained. \"A combination of political
\nrepresentatives and functional representatives is a great concept
\ninherited from our founding fathers,\" he said.<\/p>\n
FUG vice-chairman Siswono Yudhohusodo, however, refused to
\ncomment on the matter. -- JP<\/p>",
