The Chairman of the DKI Jakarta Regional Leadership Council of the\nNational Student and Youth Movement (GMPK), Asip Irama, regards the\ngovernment\u2019s decision not to increase the price of fuel oil (BBM) as an\nappropriate and measured step. This action is considered crucial amid\nthe fluctuating trend of rising global oil prices.<\/p>\n
Asip explained that in recent times, global oil prices have shown a\ntendency to increase, even briefly surpassing 100 US dollars per barrel.\nThis situation has forced many countries to adjust their domestic fuel\nprices to mitigate fiscal pressures.<\/p>\n
According to Asip, Indonesia\u2019s approach is relatively unique compared\nto the responses of other countries, most of which have chosen to raise\nprices significantly.<\/p>\n
\u201cGlobally, the common response is to increase prices. Some have even\nraised them significantly, such as Cambodia by nearly 68 percent and\nVietnam by around 50 percent. Other countries, including the United\nStates and Australia, have also made adjustments during the same\nperiod,\u201d said Asip on Thursday (2\/4).<\/p>\n
In this context, he views the Indonesian government\u2019s decision to\nmaintain price stability as an extraordinary measure amid massive global\npressures. The official affirmation from Deputy Speaker of the DPR Sufmi\nDasco Ahmad and State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi is seen as\nconcrete evidence of the government\u2019s swift action in safeguarding\npublic purchasing power.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not a decision without context. While many countries are\nraising prices due to global pressures, the government is choosing to\nhold steady. This means the burden is not immediately shifted to the\npublic,\u201d he clarified.<\/p>\n
Maintaining Inflation and Purchasing Power<\/strong><\/p>\n Asip assesses that this policy is not merely populist but a shrewd\nstrategy to dampen external impacts so they do not fully burden the\npeople. The policy of holding fuel prices is deemed to directly\ninfluence the control of national inflation.<\/p>\n Because every fuel price increase is almost certainly followed by a\nsurge in transportation and distribution costs, leading to higher prices\nfor basic necessities in the market.<\/p>\n While offering appreciation, DKI GMPK still reminds that this policy\ncarries consequences for the state\u2019s fiscal space. Transparency and\naccuracy in calculations are key to ensuring the policy remains\nsustainable.<\/p>\n \u201cHolding prices certainly comes at a cost. Here, the government must\nmaintain a balance between short-term stability and fiscal\nsustainability,\u201d Asip stressed.<\/p>\n On the other hand, he also commended Pertamina\u2019s performance in\nensuring the distribution and availability of fuel stocks remain secure\namid existing market dynamics. The government\u2019s quick response in\naddressing fuel price increase issues is also considered important for\nkeeping social conditions conducive. \u201cFor now, the government\u2019s steps\nare on the right track.
