Fuel price hike too abrupt<\/p>\n
It is extraordinarily surprising how few measures to tackle
\ninflation the government of Indonesia had put in place before the
\nshocking fuel price rise, which has had a big effect on the less
\nwell-off.<\/p>\n
Even to a non-economist, the rise raises concerns. The one-
\ntime more-than-100-percent fuel hike was apparently carried out
\nwithout previous adjustments, such as a gradual reduction of the
\nfuel subsidies along a scheduled time-line, agreed upon by
\nstakeholders in advance, thus enabling a less-traumatic landing.
\nNeither was it enacted through a series of government provisions
\nregulating a gradual increase in prices of a \"basket\" of
\nconsumable items considered fundamental for micro-economies.<\/p>\n
With the out-of-control inflationary price escalation already
\noccurring, it seems only too evident that the already inequitable
\nand imbalanced distribution of wealth in this country is going to
\nbe further skewed. No wonder, then, that the IMF praised the
\ngovernment of Indonesia for the measure.<\/p>\n
