The film \u2018Ghost in The Cell\u2019, directed by Joko Anwar, has become one\nof the most-watched films in recent weeks, with its screening time still\nexceeding 1,000 hours across approximately 300 cinemas in Indonesia.\nReleased on April 16th, \u2018Ghost in The Cell\u2019 has garnered around 3.2\nmillion viewers.<\/p>\n
A month after its premiere, Joko Anwar, through his production\ncompany Come and See Pictures, presents the Macabre Art Installation\n\u2018Ghost in The Cell\u2019. This art exhibition features six macabre artworks\nfrom the film, offering a visual interpretation of death and torture as\ndepicted in the movie.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of my intentions when making this film was to create a platform\nfor cross-disciplinary collaboration among artists and across different\nmediums. In this Macabre Art installation, we approached six\nillustrators and assigned each one to create an illustration,\u201d said Joko\nAnwar at the exhibition in Jakarta on Saturday (May 16th).<\/p>\n
The six macabre artworks include \u2018The Fan\u2019, \u2018Shower Head\u2019, \u2018The\nStove\u2019, \u2018The Dancer\u2019, \u2018Flood Light\u2019, and \u2018Lady Justice\u2019. They are\ncreated by illustrators Anwita Citriya, Benediktus Budi, Benny Kusnoto,\nCoki Greenway, Hafidzjudin, and Rudy Ao. Joko explained that each\nartwork has its own meaning and is closely related to current social\nissues in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
For example, the installation \u2018The Fan\u2019, which depicts a bloodied\nhuman body hanging above a fan, represents the cycle of social violence\nsuch as corruption, exploitation, and abuse of power in Indonesia, which\ncontinues to repeat itself and become normalised.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs for \u2018Lady Justice\u2019, it is based on an existing concept. This\nmacabre art still reflects the same principles as the statue of Lady\nJustice or Themis, which represents legal issues. However, we have made\na difference here by placing the head at the bottom. When we talk about\nthe head, it relates to honour or self-esteem, and when self-esteem is\nplaced below, it means that self-esteem is trampled upon,\u201d Joko Anwar\nexplained.<\/p>\n
Through the experience of space, sound, texture, light, and physical\nscale, this exhibition invites visitors to enter an atmosphere that was\npreviously only seen through cinema. The exhibition not only expands the\nworld of \u2018Ghost in The Cell\u2019 but also opens up a dialogue about the\nbody, violence, consumption, power, and how humans can become objects\nwithin a brutal social system.<\/p>\n
In addition to being an artistic extension of the film, the Macabre\nArt Installation \u2018Ghost in The Cell\u2019 is also part of Come and See\nPictures\u2019 effort to introduce installation art and contemporary art to\nyoung people through mediums that are closer to them: film and popular\nculture. \u201cFilm makes viewers see. Exhibition space allows visitors to\nengage directly with the issues in the film,\u201d Joko Anwar concluded.<\/p>\n
The Macabre Art Installation \u2018Ghost in The Cell\u2019 can be enjoyed for\nfree at Nirmana Falatehan, South Jakarta, from May 16th to 22nd, 2026,\nand is open to the public daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. (H-2)<\/p>\n
