Fretilin rebels kill 3 civilians<\/p>\n
DILI, East Timor (JP): Fretilin separatist rebels raided a
\nvillage and killed three civilians in Baucau on Monday night,
\nlocal military commander Col. Mahidin Simbolon said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Simbolon told journalists the attack occurred in the village
\nof Sanagai.<\/p>\n
\"We are tracking them (the rebels) down. People are expected
\nto inform us of their whereabouts,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the killing of innocent civilians showed that the
\nseparatist movement had lost the support of the public. \"In fact,
\nit is the beginning of the end of Fretilin.\"<\/p>\n
Simbolon identified the three civilian victims as M. Adil, a
\nforeman of PT Citra Tama's road project; Martinho; and Marito
\nXimenes. The latter two were brothers.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said that seven unidentified men brandishing rifles,
\npistols and knives appeared out of the darkness and attacked the
\nvictims.<\/p>\n
Adil was reportedly dragged out of his base camp and shot
\ndead, while his fellow workers, who happened to be out of the
\ncamp at the time, managed to escape.<\/p>\n
Later, the rebels broke into a nearby house and killed
\nMartinho and Ximenes, witnesses said.<\/p>\n
Simbolon repeated the government's call to the people of East
\nTimor to stay calm and to be wary of Fretilin's propaganda.<\/p>\n
Late last month, Indonesian soldiers in Wailakama village,
\nBaucau, shot dead two young East Timorese who, they said, were
\nFretilin rebels.<\/p>\n
The two men, identified as Marcelino da Silva Belo and Augusto
\nFreitas Belo, were killed while troops were searching for rebels
\nwho had reportedly shot and wounded the chief of the Vemasse
