Fresh thinking sought for new leadership<\/p>\n

Prior to the Indonesian Sports Council's (KONI) congress to elect
\na new chairman, officials from various sports organizations urged
\nKONI to do away with the fund-raising capacity as a prerequisite
\nfor a candidate.<\/p>\n
\"We have been stuck in an old-fashioned paradigm, wherein a
\nKONI chairman must be capable of raising funds when Indonesia
\nprepares to take part in competitions. That should change, now we
\nare looking to the next congress,\" Steve Tengko, an official of
\nthe Indonesian Powerlifting, Bodybuilding and Weightlifting
\n(PABBSI) said in a one-day discussion here on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The KONI-sponsored discussion, organized by Jakarta Sports
\nJournalists Association (SIWO Jaya) at the Hilton Hotel, was
\nattended by representatives from 20 SIWO provincial chapters and
\n11 of the 40 KONI-affiliated sports organizations.<\/p>\n
The requisite capability of raising money is one of the six
\nitems that must be possessed by a KONI chairman as stipulated in
\nits guidance book.<\/p>\n
Steve said he did not totally disagree with the issue. \"I just
\nwant to remove it from the guidance book. Because it can be
\nmisleading.<\/p>\n
\"We must wake up with a new model. I agree that money is a
\nmust in sports development. But it's not all that we need. The
\nmost crucial thing is the leadership,\" Steve said.<\/p>\n
However, the opinion about fund-raising issues turned out to
\nbe split among the participants with those coming from the
\nprovinces insisting on its significance and its stipulations.<\/p>\n
\"It's still essential. How can we rely on the chairman if he
\nis unable to raise money,\" Frans Ohoiwutun, from Papua, told The
\nJakarta Post.<\/p>\n
The discussion was an attempt to look for new insights to
\nrevitalize the already existing requirements about the KONI
\nchairmanship, which will be submitted as an input to the
\ncongress.<\/p>\n
The congress will be held in Jakarta from Feb. 25 through Feb.
\n27 next year, during which the forum will elect a new chairman to
\nsucceed the incumbent Wismoyo Arismunandar.<\/p>\n
The next leadership of KONI is considered to be crucial in the
\nchallenge of international sports, given the current downward
\ntrend of the national sports signified particularly by
\nIndonesia's dismal performance in the past three years both in
\nthe Southeast Asian Games (SEA) and Asian Games.<\/p>\n
On each occasion, the athletes preparation seemed to depend on
\nhow well KONI could collect money.<\/p>\n
Joko Pramono, from the Indonesian Off-road Federation (IOF),
\nshared Steve's opinion, warning against KONI's excessive
\ndependency on fund-raising campaigns.<\/p>\n
\"A KONI chairman must be able to raise funds?\" Joko queried.<\/p>\n
\"KONI is not a commercial entity, is it? His dealings with
\nfund-raising activities could take much of his time he should be
\nsolely focused on sports development,\" Joko said.<\/p>",
