Fresh row erupts over blood<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: A fresh row has erupted over the blood samples of
\nslain journalist Fuad Muhammad Syafruddin's that the police threw
\naway.<\/p>\n
Lawyers representing the journalist's widow, Marsiyem, denied
\nyesterday the police accusation that she was seeking to
\n\"commercialize\" the blood by filing a Rp 105-million (US$45,000)
\nlawsuit.<\/p>\n
Budi Hartono, from the Yogyakarta chapter of the Indonesian
\nLegal Aid Institute, said the accusation was groundless, and that
\nthe police did not understand the underlying philosophy of the
\nlegal action.<\/p>\n
\"In fact the justice that we are seeking cannot be measured in
\nterms of money,\" Budi said.<\/p>\n
Marsiyem filed the lawsuit against the chief of the Bantul
\npolice precinct and a detective for losing the blood samples they
\nborrowed from her for their investigation into her husband's
\ndeath.<\/p>\n
Police said they dumped the sample in the Indian Ocean in the
\nbelief that they would obtain a divine blessing in their effort
\nto identify the murderer of the Bernas daily journalist.<\/p>\n
It is generally believed that his murder last August was
\nconnected to his investigative reporting of the alleged
\nwidespread corruption in the Bantul administration.<\/p>\n
Critics have accused the police of a cover-up. The police have
\narrested a travel agent employee they believe is Safruddin's
\nmurderer but critics doubt he is guilty. (23)<\/p>",
