Fresh riots hit W. Java subdistrict<\/p>\n
BANDUNG (JP): A riot triggered by price hikes hit the West
\nJava subdistrict of Kadipaten in Majalengka regency, 10
\nkilometers east of here, as other towns remained tense yesterday.<\/p>\n
Dozens of people began to take to Jl. Siliwangi and Jl. Baros
\nat midday, attacking shops and setting them ablaze. At least 15
\nshops were damaged, six of them -- plus several motorcycles --
\nwere set on fire.<\/p>\n
Security authorities quickly restored order and arrested two
\nmen suspected of sparking the unrest. There was no report of
\ninjuries during the 40-minute police clampdown.<\/p>\n
In Cirebon, minor rioting erupted in Karangsembung village
\njust hours before Governor R. Nuriana toured the town to inspect
\nthe village after rioting Friday. The latest outbreak left two
\nhouses burned.<\/p>\n
Nuriana visited people in Cirebon's riot-hit areas of Lemah
\nAbang, Pasar Gebang, Losari and Cileduk who were clearing
\nremnants of buildings attacked by angry rioters in the past few
\ndays.<\/p>\n
The coastal town had yet to return to normal yesterday, with
\nmany shops staying closed and major bus terminals witnessing a
\nsharp decline of passengers leaving the town. Instead, people
\nseemingly preferred to travel by train as evidenced by increased
\nnumbers of travelers at the railway station.<\/p>\n
Violence also spilled over into Purwokerto in Central Java
\nyesterday when a number of people stoned buses heading for the
\ncoastal areas of Banyumas, Pemalang, Brebes and Cilacap, all in
\nCentral Java.<\/p>\n
Antara reported that the attack caused bus and other public
\ntransportation drivers in Purwokerto to stop their activities,
\nfearing that riots would resume. Hundreds of residents were left
\nstranded for hours due to the absence of transportation.<\/p>\n
Tension also reigned in the Central Java town of Purbalingga
\nas hundreds of people pelted shops selling basic commodities for
\nrefusing to open. But the military and police managed to
\nimmediately quell any potential rioting. They made no arrests,
\nand only ordered the angry people to return home.<\/p>\n
Bandung was calmer yesterday, despite rumors that strikes and
\nriots were about to erupt. The rumors affected public
\ntransportation as groups of people had to wait for hours for
\npublic minibuses.<\/p>\n
More troops were seen patrolling the town despite heavy rain
\nthroughout the day.<\/p>\n
Governor Nuriana called on entrepreneurs and public
\ntransportation drivers to resume their business activities as
\nusual to prevent public anxiety from worsening.<\/p>\n
\"Most riots were triggered by a lack of public transportation.
\nWith such a condition, people tend to gather. And once this
\nhappens, they can be easily driven to rioting,\" Nuriana said.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Central Java Governor Soewardi accused a certain
\ngroup based in Jakarta for organizing the riots that had rocked
\nthe province and other towns across Java.<\/p>\n
\"We found that some people we arrested for allegedly inciting
\nriots came from Jakarta. They arrived here along with the exodus
\nof Idul Fitri revelers,\" Suwardi said over the weekend.
