Fresh riot rocks West Kalimantan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A group of about 40 unidentified men went on a
\nburning rampage in the West Kalimantan district of Siantan Tengah
\nyesterday, damaging a foundation that runs Catholic schools, a
\npress report said.<\/p>\n
Suara Pembaruan reported the riot began at around 3:40 a.m.
\nwhen the men attacked the office of Karya Sosial Pancur Kasih
\nFoundation, burning a truck and two motorcycles within the
\ncompound.<\/p>\n
The rioters smashed window panes and threw molotov cocktails
\nat the motorcycles and trucks. They vandalized the office's
\nelectrical installation and cooperative unit while retreating.<\/p>\n
The report said the men wearing masks broke into a boarding
\nhouse near the foundation, slashing two women with sickles and
\nsending terrified occupants to the attic.<\/p>\n
The attack forced the foundation's officials to close for a
\nday the St. Fransiskus Asisi junior and senior high schools,
\nwhich have 773 students, for security reasons.<\/p>\n
The violence occurred while the province is still nursing the
\nwounds inflicted in an ethnically motivated clash on Dec. 30
\nbetween Madura immigrants and Dayak natives in Sanggau Ledo. Five
\npeople were killed and 21 others went missing then.<\/p>\n
Military authorities in West Kalimantan were not available for
\ncomment yesterday.<\/p>\n
Suara Pembaruan did not say if any arrests had been made.
\nPontianak Mayor RA Siregar said he regretted the attack and asked
\njournalists not to \"exaggerate\" it.<\/p>\n
Security officers were seen guarding the school in
