French, Vietnamese envoys meet Soeharto<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto expressed his appreciation
\nyesterday for France's commitment to boost its economic ties with
\nIndonesia despite the financial crisis here.<\/p>\n
"French cooperation in the economy and its development
\nassistance has strengthened our development process," Soeharto
\nsaid after receiving the credentials of new French Ambassador
\nGerard Cros.<\/p>\n
France is one of Indonesia's main trading partners in Europe.
\nImports from France in 1996 amounted to US$1.06 billion while
\nexports to the West European country were worth $519.8 million.<\/p>\n
Cros reminded Soeharto that France and Indonesia signed a
\nfinance protocol worth 507 million francs (US$83.1 million) in
\nDecember to fund sea transportation and port cooperation
\nprojects.<\/p>\n
"France is interested in stepping up mutually beneficial
\ncooperation between the two countries," Cros said.<\/p>\n
Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Dang Quang also presented his
\ncredentials to Soeharto yesterday.<\/p>\n
"The cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia has recently
\nincreased, especially after Vietnam joined the Association of
\nSoutheast Asian Nations," Soeharto said.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Dang Quang said the two nations shared a common
\ndesire to turn the region into a zone of peace, stability and
