Freeport finds new gold and copper deposits in Irian Jaya<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. announced
\nover the weekend that it has intercepted within an igneous
\ngranitic intrusion, copper mineralization along a 240 meter
\ninterval that averages 1.16 percent copper, 0.1 gram of gold per
\nton and 6 grams of silver per ton, at its Lembah Tembaga prospect
\nlocated approximately one kilometer southwest of its Grasberg
\ndeposit in Irian Jaya.<\/p>\n
The hole was drilled at a 45 degree angle from a surface
\nelevation of 3,707 meters and intersected the intrusion at 366
\nmeters downhole from surface, the U.S. company said in a press
\nrelease.<\/p>\n
At 785 meters downhole from surface, \"stockwork-like\" copper
\nmineralization was intercepted and continues to 1,025 meters,
\nyielding the assays, the release added.<\/p>\n
The company is engaged in the exploration, mining and milling
\nof copper, gold and silver in Irian Jaya and the smelting and
\nrefining of copper concentrates in Spain.<\/p>\n
With only one exploration hole into this intrusion, it is not
\npossible to predict the extent of the mineralization. If a
\ncommercial deposit is present, the company has the option of
\nmining Lembah Tembaga through the possible extension of the
\nGrasberg open pit or underground through block caving.<\/p>\n
If block caving were used to mine this area, the potential
\norebody could be accessed from the present mill through a series
\nof adits (tunnels), including either the Amole adit or the Big
\nGossan exploration drift both being driven at the 2,900 meter
\nelevation.<\/p>\n
One of these adits would have to be extended approximately two
\nkilometers to the west or northwest in order to gain access if
\nthe underground block caving method were to be utilized.<\/p>\n
Three additional rigs are being moved into the area providing
\na total of four rigs to begin delineation of this area and
\ndetermine if this mineralization is commercial.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, the company is currently drilling with one rig at
\nits Etna Bay prospect and is in the process of bringing a second
\nrig into the area.<\/p>\n
Exploration activities also continue at the Big Gossan Wanagon
\nand Wabu properties as well as at other locations within
\nFreeport's nine million acre area in Irian Jaya.<\/p>",
