Freeport and human rights<\/p>\n
After following the progress of the Timika case which involved
\nkillings, disappearance, intimidation and harassment allegedly by
\nthe military in the concessionary area of Freeport Indonesia in
\nIrian Jaya, I wonder why there has been no single comment from
\nthe U.S. government regarding the human rights violations in that
\ncase.<\/p>\n
The U.S. government has expressed its concerns on the many
\nhuman rights violations in Indonesia, but why does it keep silent
\non the Freeport case? Do I have to assume that it is because of
\nthe huge investment of the U.S. multinational company, Freeport-
\nMcMoran in the project? Does economic interests come above human
\nrights and democracy that the U.S. government always calls for?<\/p>\n
I do not want to think that there is a double standard on the
\npart of the U.S.. Can somebody from the U.S. Embassy here
\nexplain?<\/p>\n
