The Indonesian government, through the Danantara Investment Management Agency and the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Agency, launched the 2026 Free Homecoming Programme with State-Owned Enterprises, transporting 116,688 participants from Gelora Bung Karno complex, exceeding the initial target of 104,000. PT PLN (Persero) contributed by ferrying 12,500 travellers using mass transport modes, reducing projected emissions from 578 to 392 tons of CO2e and offsetting the remainder to achieve net zero emissions via a micro-hydro power plant. This initiative underscores the commitment to safer, more comfortable travel, traffic decongestion, and national sustainability goals, as highlighted by Coordinating Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and PLN's CEO Darmawan Prasodjo.

The Danantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara) and the
State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Agency (BP BUMN) released 116,688
participants in the 2026 Free Homecoming Programme with State-Owned
Enterprises (BUMN) at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) complex on Tuesday (17
March 2026). PT PLN (Persero) also collaborated by transporting 12,500
homecomers with efforts to reduce emissions and implement carbon
offsets, thereby achieving zero emissions or net zero emissions for the
programme.

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development,
Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, stated that the free homecoming is one of the
joint initiatives by the government.

“The government expresses thanks and appreciation to the BUMN for
implementing the free homecoming, as this will certainly reduce travel
using private vehicles, especially motorbikes. In line with President
Prabowo’s directive that if we can provide the best services to the
public, this certainly shows that the state and government are always
present for them,” he said.

Head of BP BUMN, Dony Oskaria, conveyed that the BUMN Free Homecoming
Programme is a manifestation of BUMN’s commitment to be present and
provide direct benefits to the community, especially during important
moments like Eid al-Fitr. Through this programme, the state via BUMN
helps the community realise safer and more comfortable homecoming
journeys.

“The BUMN Free Homecoming Programme is a manifestation of mutual
cooperation and BUMN’s care for the community. We want to ensure that
the community can undertake homecoming journeys more safely,
comfortably, and arrive safely, while also helping to reduce traffic
congestion during the Lebaran period,” said Dony.

The 2026 BUMN Free Homecoming Programme recorded a realisation of
116,688 homecomers. This figure exceeded the initial target set at
104,000 homecomers.

“We hope all participants can arrive at their hometowns safely and
celebrate Eid al-Fitr with their families in safety and comfort,” said
Dony.

PLN’s President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, said that in line with
the directives from BPI Danantara and BP BUMN, the company supports the
2026 BUMN Free Homecoming. This aligns with the government’s efforts to
improve public mobility for those wishing to go homecoming while
reducing fuel oil usage and easing traffic congestion.

“Through this programme, we hope the participants can enjoy safe and
comfortable homecoming journeys, and celebrate moments of togetherness
peacefully with their families in their hometowns,” said Darmawan.

Following the increasing interest from homecomers, PLN also increased
the participant quota to 12,500 people, up from the previous year’s
11,322 participants. The departures were carried out simultaneously on
17 March 2026 from seven cities: Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali, Makassar,
Balikpapan, Padang, and Aceh.

The travel routes include Jakarta to West Java, Central Java, East
Java, and West Sumatra; Surabaya to Central Java and East Java; Denpasar
to East Java; Makassar to Surabaya and Baubau; Balikpapan to Surabaya;
Padang to Palembang; and Banda Aceh to Medan.

PLN ensures that this initiative aligns with the national
sustainability agenda and energy transition. Through its subsidiary, PLN
Energy Management Indonesia (EMI), the company conducts a comprehensive
carbon footprint calculation to measure and mitigate the environmental
impact of this programme.

In a business-as-usual scenario, if the homecomers used private
oil-fuelled vehicles, the total emissions were projected to reach 578
tons of CO2e. However, by switching to mass transportation modes such as
trains, buses, and sea vessels, emissions were reduced to 392 tons of
CO2e, or a reduction of 186 tons of CO2e.

Not stopping at reduction efforts, PLN also took beyond-compliance
steps through carbon offsetting of 392 tons of CO2e from the Gunung
Wugul Micro-Hydro Power Plant (PLTMH). The programme was successfully
implemented with zero emissions or Net Zero Emission (NZE) in line with
the company’s emphasis on sustainability principles in all
operations.

“This is not just about delivering the community back to their
hometowns, but also about how we ensure those journeys are safe,
efficient, and environmentally friendly,” said Darmawan.
",
