Free plastic surgery for kids<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Dharmais Foundation, chaired by President
\nSoeharto, will soon help 1,000 people with harelips, a foundation
\nexecutive said yesterday.<\/p>\n
In cooperation with Indonesia's Plastic Surgeons Association,
\nthe foundation will conduct free plastic surgery on 500 patients
\nfrom Jakarta and 500 other patients from East and West Nusa
\nTenggara provinces, Soedihardjo said.<\/p>\n
\"Patients are expected to register at the nearest office of
\nGolkar (ruling organization) or government hospitals,\"
\nSoedihardjo said after meeting with the President at his Jl.
\nCendana residence.<\/p>\n
The free surgery will start next month and continue until
\nMarch next year. Soedihardjo added that harelip surgery for 1,000
\npeople would normally cost Rp 342 million.<\/p>\n
He said all needy people, including non-Golkar cadres,
\nwould be entitled to the service.<\/p>\n
\"We will prioritize under five-year-old children to enable
\nthem to grow normally,\" he said.<\/p>\n
According to Gentur Sudjatmiko, chairman of the plastic
\nsurgeons association, at least one in every 1,000 infant was born
\nwith a harelip. In East Nusa Tenggara the percentage doubles.<\/p>\n
\"One of the main cause is malnutrition during pregnancy or
\ninfection during the first three months of pregnancy,\" Gentur
