Fraser pays courtesy call on Mega<\/p>\n
Former Australian prime minister Malcolm Fraser paid a
\ncourtesy call on President Megawati Soekarnoputri on
\nWednesday, in which they discussed various issues, including the
\nIraqi crisis.<\/p>\n
During the 30-minute meeting, Fraser briefed Megawati on a
\ntwo-day conference attended by former heads of state that called
\nfor a peaceful solution to the Iraqi crisis.<\/p>\n
\"He was just telling the President that the meeting opposed
\nunilateral acts from the U.S. in dealing with the crisis, which
\nignored the role of United Nations,\" Indonesian Minister for
\nForeign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda said after accompanying Megawati
\nduring the meeting.<\/p>\n
The United States and Britain are building up their military
\nstrength in the Middle East to attack Iraq for allegedly
\nproducing and storing weapons of mass destruction.<\/p>\n
Fraser told Megawati that he was against the decision of
\nAustralian Prime Minister John Howard to send troops to assist
\nthe United States in disarming Iraqi President Saddam Husein.<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for Social Welfare Jusuf Kalla also
\naccompanied Megawati during the meeting.<\/p>\n
Fraser was among four former heads of state who attended the
\nmeeting of the InterAction Council here from March 11 through
\nMarch 12. Former president B.J. Habibie, former Dutch prime
\nminister Andreas van Agt and former Ecuadorian president Jamil
\nMahuad also attended.<\/p>\n
The meeting recommended on Wednesday that the Iraqi crisis be
\nsolved peacefully and through the United Nations. --JP<\/p>",
