FPI threatens to raid nightspots during Ramadhan<\/p>\n

Defying police warnings, the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI)
\nmaintained that it would raid nightspots violating city
\nregulations governing the operation of entertainment centers
\nduring the holy month of Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
Jafar Siddiq, secretary-general of the Islamic Defenders
\nTroops (LPI), a unit of FPI, said on Thursday that FPI members
\nwould specifically target entertainment centers that serve
\nalcoholic drinks during Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
They would also strike videogame centers, massage parlors,
\ndiscotheques and nightclubs that, according to a city regulation,
\nare prohibited from operating during Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
Jafar, FPI's former field coordinator for South Jakarta,
\nasserted that he had prepared some 400,000 personnel at 3,000
\nposts across Greater Jakarta, 580 of which are located in
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
\"FPI will remain tough, like last year, by supervising
\nadherence to the bylaw and raiding those places that violate it.
\nOf course, the action will only be taken if there is no favorable
\nresponse to a letter of warning to them\", he said.<\/p>\n
When questioned about action that police would take against
\nany groups taking unlawful action against nightspots, Jaffar said
\nthat FPI would not back off, adding that if bloodshed was
\nrequired then that sacrifice would be made.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Anton Bachrul Alam had
\nearlier said that police would take stern action against hard-
\nline groups conducting vigilante campaigns during the fasting
\nmonth of Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
FPI became infamous for their raids on venues last year when
\nthey attacked several entertainment centers such as MW Bar and
\nRatu Ayu Bar, both located in Wijaya Kusuma area, South Jakarta,
\nand Kawanu Pub in Tebet district, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Besides FPI, the Justice Party also vowed to oppose sinners
\nduring Ramadhan, but said that it would pursue its objections
\npeacefully.<\/p>\n
Justice Party chairman Hidayat Nur Wahid said on Thursday that
\nhis party had prepared several nonaggressive plans, including
\n\"enlightening programs\" that would be held in all districts in
\nthe capital, peaceful parades, placing posters in strategic
\nplaces, mass prayers and social activities.<\/p>",
