Hamilton, Canada (ANTARA) – As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its
fourth year, on Tuesday, the United Nations General Assembly passed a
resolution calling for a comprehensive, just, and sustainable peace in
Ukraine.

The resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly with 107 votes
in favour and 12 against, while 51 other countries abstained. Russia was
one of the countries that rejected the proposed resolution, and the
United States abstained.

The resolution, proposed by Ukraine and supported by 46 countries,
highlights the impact of the war on regional and global dynamics and
expresses “deep concern” over Russia’s attacks on “civilians, civilian
objects, and critical energy infrastructure”, which have exacerbated the
humanitarian situation.

The resolution reaffirms the commitment of the UN General Assembly to
the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of
Ukraine, including its territorial waters.

In addition to calling for an “immediate, complete, and unconditional
ceasefire”, the resolution also calls for the “full exchange of
prisoners of war, the release of all those who have been unlawfully
detained, and the repatriation of all civilians who have been forcibly
displaced or deported, including children” as a key step in fostering
mutual trust.

However, the US had proposed amendments to the draft resolution, with
the second paragraph of the background and the second operative clause
proposed to be removed from the draft resolution to be decided
separately.

Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa strongly condemned
the US proposal as “very worrying and unacceptable”.

Meanwhile, the US Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Tammy
Bruce, stated that her country believed that certain language in the
resolution “could divert attention from ongoing negotiations” and “does
not support discussions on the breadth of possible diplomatic steps that
could pave the way for lasting peace”.

Source: Anadolu

Translator: Nabil Ihsan
",
