Fourth person charged over Tansil's escape<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A fourth staff of the Cipinang penitentiary was
\narraigned in the East Jakarta District Court on Thursday in
\nconnection with the escape of businessman Eddy Tansil.<\/p>\n
The prosecution alleged that SM, a prison clerk, accepted
\nRp 1.1 million (US$480) in bribes for his role in helping the
\nconvicted prisoner escape.<\/p>\n
SM, 47, was charged under Article 419 of the Criminal Code.<\/p>\n
The article states that any government employee who accepts a
\ngift, knowing that it is intended to influence the recipient into
\ndoing something contrary to his job, shall be liable for a
\nmaximum of five years imprisonment.<\/p>\n
Three other employees were arraigned in court on Wednesday and
\na fifth suspect, DD, the head of the guards at the time of the
\nescape, is to appear in court on next Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Sumirah told the court that SM had colluded with
\nother penitentiary employees to arrange the escape on May 4.<\/p>\n
According to the prosecution, SM escorted Tansil, first in a
\ncar driven by DD's son. On the way, they decided to disembark. SM
\nand Tansil then took a taxi, heading for the Bukit Duri area
\nwhere Tansil's wife was waiting in another car.<\/p>\n
SM was later dropped off on Jl. Gajah Mada in West Jakarta,
\nwhile Tansil and his wife disappeared, Sumirah said.<\/p>\n
Tansil's escape only came to light two days later. A massive
\nmanhunt launched since then has failed to locate his whereabouts,
\nwith many suggesting that he has fled the country. The government
\nhas already requested the assistance of Interpol.<\/p>\n
Tansil was in the second year of a 20-year jail term meted out
\nfor defrauding Bank Pembangunan Indonesia (Bapindo) of $620
\nmillion.<\/p>\n
Presiding Judge Kamar Sembiring adjourned the trial to
\nWednesday. SM, who was accompanied by lawyer Arif Susijamto
\nyesterday, is scheduled to read his defense at next week's
