        "content": "<p>Fourth Bapindo trial: State versus Subekti<\/p>\n<p>By Rudy Madanir<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The government is increasing the tempo in its<br>\nendeavor to prosecute all of the people believed responsible for<br>\nbringing Bapindo to the verge of collapse.<\/p>\n<p>After achieving a corruption conviction against a junior<br>\nBapindo executive, the state is scheduled today to arraign<br>\nSubekti Ismaun, the bank's former president, in the South Jakarta<br>\nDistrict Court.<\/p>\n<p>He will be the fourth person to be tried in connection with<br>\nthe Rp 1.3 trillion ($620 million) loan scandal at the<br>\ngovernment-owned bank.<\/p>\n<p>Maman Suparman, formerly deputy manager of Bapindo's Jakarta<br>\nbranch, has already been sentenced to nine years imprisonment by<br>\nthe same court. Eddy Tansil, the businessman at the center of the<br>\nscandal, is facing the possibility of life imprisonment in his<br>\ntrial at the Central Jakarta District Court. The trial of Towil<br>\nHeryoto, a member of Bapindo's board of directors during<br>\nSubekti's time, has just began in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Two other former Bapindo directors are also expected to be<br>\narraigned soon: Sjahrizal and Bambang Kuntjoro.<\/p>\n<p>Legal battle<\/p>\n<p>As in the cases of the three first defendants, the trial of<br>\nSubekti Ismaun has all the elements of a highly charged legal<br>\nbattle, from the amount of money involved, the possibility that<br>\nthe case is tied to senior government officials, and no less<br>\nimportant, the players in the courtroom battle themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The following is a brief synopsis of the backgrounds of some<br>\nof them:<\/p>\n<p>Soedjatman: The presiding judge:<\/p>\n<p>Soedjatman is the chief of the South Jakarta District Court.<\/p>\n<p>The 59-year-old man who hails from Blora, Central Java, has<br>\nclocked 35 years as a judge.<\/p>\n<p>His court career dates back to 1959 in Pati, Central Java,<br>\nwhere he served before he was posted in Rembang, Central Java, in<br>\n1970, Kudus, Central Java, in 1979 and then in Denpasar, Bali, in<br>\n1984, when he was made chief of the district court. Two years<br>\nlater he became chief of the court in Palembang, South Sumatra,<br>\nand in 1991 he took over the South Jakarta District Court.<\/p>\n<p>He studied law at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta and<br>\nobtained his master's degree at Diponegoro University in<br>\nSemarang, Central Java, in 1967.<\/p>\n<p>His most celebrated cases involve convicting foreigners on<br>\ndrug charges during his stint in Bali. He also handled a major<br>\ntimber smuggling case in Palembang.<\/p>\n<p>Soedjatman will be assisted by judges Pieter Purba and<br>\nStefanus Soetrisno during the trial.<\/p>\n<p>Amir Syamsuddin: Subekti's lawyer:<\/p>\n<p>Born in Ujungpandang in 1941, Amir Syamsuddin is a well-known<br>\nlawyer produced by the University of Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>After doing a stint at a law firm led by O.C. Kaligis, Amir<br>\nmoved on to establish his own firm in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>Amir, who is also a former entrepreneur, is well known as a<br>\ncorporate lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Amir will be assisted by Henry Yosodiningrat, another<br>\nprominent lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Lampung in 1954, he has earned a reputation as a<br>\nlawyer who handles subversion cases, such as the bombing of Bank<br>\nCentral Asia in the early 1980s. He also defended two students<br>\namong the group of 21 students who were accused of defaming<br>\nPresident Soeharto recently.<\/p>\n<p>Subekti's defense team will also include Nurhasyim Ilyas,<br>\nAtmajaya Salim, Edinas Sikumbang and Taufik Arizar.<\/p>\n<p>Tarwo Hadi Sadjuri: The chief prosecutor:<\/p>\n<p>Tarwo Hadi Sadjuri, 49, is a specialist in prosecuting<br>\ncorruption cases.<\/p>\n<p>An alumni of the school for judges and prosecutors, he<br>\ngraduated from the school of law of Brawijaya University in<br>\nMalang, East Java, in 1981.<\/p>\n<p>Hailing from Nganjuk, East Java, Tarwo began his career as a<br>\ngovernment prosecutor in Kediri, East Java, in 1967. He then<br>\nmoved to Surabaya, Wamena, Irian Jaya, and East Kalimantan.<br>\nBeginning last year, he joined the Corruption Crimes Division of<br>\nthe Attorney General's Office.<\/p>\n<p>Considered successful in prosecuting a businessman on tax<br>\nevasion charges in Tangerang, West Java, several months ago,<br>\nTarwo was appointed chief prosecutor in the Subekti case.<\/p>",
