        "content": "<p>Police have arrested four of six perpetrators involved in the killing\nof a tapir that appeared on the Trans-Sumatra Highway in Mesuji,\nLampung. Member of Commission IV of the Indonesian House of\nRepresentatives (DPR RI) from the National Awakening Party (PKB)\nfaction, Daniel Johan, expressed shock at the perpetrators\u2019 actions.\n\u201cHow heartless. The perpetrators must be processed legally and\ninvestigated to determine whether their actions were committed out of\nignorance or with full awareness that the tapir is a protected animal,\u201d\nsaid Daniel Johan when contacted on Saturday (4\/7\/2026). Daniel stated\nthat if the perpetrators knew the tapir\u2019s protected status, they must\nface firm sanctions. He hopes this will create a deterrent effect. \u201cIf\nit is proven that they were aware of its protected status yet still\nhunted or killed it, then law enforcement officials must impose strict\nsanctions in accordance with prevailing regulations. Consistent law\nenforcement is essential to provide a deterrent effect while protecting\nIndonesia\u2019s biodiversity,\u201d he said. Nonetheless, he views this issue as\nnot solely a matter of law enforcement. According to him, there needs to\nbe efforts in supervision and prevention. \u201cThe government must also\nstrengthen conservation efforts by protecting the tapir\u2019s natural\nhabitat, preventing uncontrolled forest conversion, and enhancing public\neducation so that human-wildlife conflict can be minimised. Wildlife\nprotection must go hand in hand with ecosystem protection,\u201d he stated.\nThe Chairman of the PKB Central Executive Board stressed that the tapir\nis a protected animal. Any act of hunting or killing constitutes a\ncriminal offence. \u201cTherefore, preserving the tapir is not only the\ngovernment\u2019s responsibility but also that of all elements of society in\norder to maintain ecosystem balance and the heritage of biodiversity for\nfuture generations,\u201d he added. It was previously reported that police\narrested four of the six perpetrators involved in the killing of a tapir\nthat appeared on the Trans-Sumatra Highway in Mesuji, Lampung. The four\narrested perpetrators are Ketut Suwarne (50), Wayan Supatre (30), Tri\nSuharyanto (45), and Made Putra Yasa (43). Prior to being killed, the\ntapir had caused a stir among residents after being recorded walking\nalong the East Sumatra Highway in the Register 45 area, Mesuji Regency,\nLampung. The animal is believed to have strayed from its habitat before\nbeing found dead and dismembered. The perpetrators were eventually\narrested in the early hours of Friday (3\/7\/2026) after a video of the\nslaughter went viral on social media.<\/p>",
