Four suspects shot dead for resistance<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City police yesterday shot four suspected
\ncriminals who were resisting arrest.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said that the
\nshots fired by the Ciracas and Pancoran officers were within
\npolice procedure.<\/p>\n
\"The officers, for instance, fired warning shots into the air
\nbefore aiming at the suspects,\" he said.<\/p>\n
One of the dead was known by police as a repeat offender. He
\nwas identified as Rio Manulang, 20.<\/p>\n
He had been wanted for a long time by the Ciracas police in
\nEast Jakarta for his alleged leading role in a series of holdups
\nat the Kampung Rambutan bus terminal.<\/p>\n
In most of his operations, Manulang and his accomplices, who
\nare still at large, boarded buses heading to and from several
\ntowns outside Jakarta and pointed sharp weapons at the drivers
\nand conductors, said a Ciracas police detective.<\/p>\n
After overpowering the bus crew, the group allegedly locked
\nthe doors and started to ransack passengers' bags.<\/p>\n
A number of passengers who resisted were attacked by the
\ngroup, says the officer.<\/p>\n
Manulang was shot during a predawn raid near the terminal
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
The other three suspects shot yesterday morning were believed
\nto be members of a five-member gang. They were supposedly taking
\na rest after committing a robbery but met face-to-face with a
\nPancoran police patrol in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
According to spokesman Iman, the five suspected robbers
\nimmediately left their car on Jl. Kalibata Utara when three
\npatrol officers came close to their parked vehicle.<\/p>\n
The three were shot in the leg while trying to get into a
\nstorm drain after ignoring the police's warning shots.<\/p>\n
In their car, police found a wide range of electronic goods,
\nsuch as two television sets, a tape recorder set and an electric
