Four SEA Games athletes fail doping tests<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The 19th SEA Games organizing committee
\nannounced yesterday that four medalists had tested positive for
\nbanned substances.<\/p>\n
Secretary-general Rudolf S. Warouw identified the athletes as
\nIndonesian cyclist Tonton Susanto, Myanmar body builder Khing
\nMaung Htwe, and marksman Nuanwan Kerdsumran and decathlete David
\nJimsumruay, both Thai.<\/p>\n
Rudolf, who is also the National Sports Council's secretary-
\ngeneral, said the Jakarta doping laboratory, which received
\ntemporary accreditation from the Sydney doping laboratory for the
\nGames, had checked Tonton's two urine samples.<\/p>\n
One, numbered A-083630 and taken after his win in the 40 km
\nIndividual Time Trial (ITT), contained the stimulant fencafamine.<\/p>\n
\"From the analysis of his sample, we've concluded that he
\ndidn't consume it on purpose. He might not have realized that he
\nhad consumed medicine which contained the substance,\" Rudolf
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He also won gold in the road race.<\/p>\n
\"His B sample, which was taken after winning the road race,
\ntested negative,\" Rudolf said.<\/p>\n
His gold in the ITT will be forfeited to the silver medalist,
\nVictor Espiritu of the Philippines, while the silver will go to
\nMalaysian Razali and the bronze to Indonesian M. Basri.<\/p>\n
The SEA Games Federation's medical committee secretary, Dr.
\nCarmen Jahja, who accompanied Rudolf, confirmed fencafamine was a
\nprohibited substance under international sports rules.<\/p>\n
\"This substance can stimulate a person's strength, and can't
\nbe bought without a prescription,\" she said.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Cycling Federation's secretary-general, Didi
\nSoedijanto, said responsibility for Tonton's mistake should be
\nborne by the whole team.<\/p>\n
\"I believe he didn't take the substances on purpose. He may
\nnot have known that he consumed the drug,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Rudolf said the doping control and gender verification
\ncommittee had yet to check B samples of the foreign athletes,
\npending notification of their national organizing committees.<\/p>\n
\"The organizers will send letters to the respective NOCs
\ninforming them of the problem. We hope they will respond soon on
\nwhether they want us to check the B samples.\"<\/p>\n
Kerdsumran, who won the gold in the women's 10-meter air
\nrifle, and David, gold medalist in the decathlon, tested positive
\nfor salbutamol.<\/p>\n
The drug is used for respiratory problems such as asthma, but
\nalso has an anabolic side effect.<\/p>\n
Use of salbutamol is permitted by inhaler only, and must be
\ndeclared in writing prior to the event's medical authorities
\nprior to competition.<\/p>\n
Kerdsumran will most likely return her gold, which would go to
\nrunner up Dang Thi of Vietnam, while Malaysian Norika Binti
\nAbdullah would receive the silver.<\/p>\n
David's gold may go to Indonesian Gaos Maturidi, with
\nMyanmar's Win Nyut taking silver.<\/p>\n
Khing, who won the bronze in the 75 kg men's category, tested
\npositive for phenylpropanolamine, an appetite suppressant and
\ndecongestant sometimes used as a stimulant. (yan)<\/p>",
