Four questioned over copied phones<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City police spokesman Lt. Col. Bambang
\nPermantoro confirmed to reporters yesterday that four
\nentertainers have been questioned by city police for using
\ncounterfeit hand phones.<\/p>\n
A police source said the four entertainers have been
\nidentified as Deddy Dhukun, Yacob, Baliyanto, and Dicky.<\/p>\n
Yacob, Dicky and Baliyanto were picked up by police on
\nWednesday and spent a night in police custody, the source said.<\/p>\n
\"Deddy Dhukun is a possible suspect and will be questioned
\nagain within the week,\" the source said.<\/p>\n
During the past week police have arrested six people for
\nallegedly making counterfeit hand phones and stealing telephone
\npulses. Police have confiscated 12 hand phones and an electronic
\nserial reader (ESR), which was used to detect the serial numbers
\nof on-air hand phones.<\/p>\n
A preliminary investigation led to duplicated hand phone
\nbuyers, including the four entertainers.<\/p>\n
Head of the Jakarta Police Criminal Investigation Department,
\nCol. Nurfaizi, said that the suspects used the ESR to detect
\nhand phone serial numbers in use, and entered the numbers into
\nthe counterfeit hand phones.<\/p>\n
Users of duplicated hand phones can only send calls, not
\nreceive them.<\/p>\n
The pulses of counterfeited hand phones are recorded on
\noriginal hand phones, whose serial numbers have been copied, with
\nthe fees being charged to the owner of the original phone.
\nBecause of the copying, many hand phone owners have complained to
\nthe state-owned telecommunication company PT Telkom that their
\ncall recorded pulses far exceeded the amount they used, Nurfaizi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Prices of legal hand phones vary from Rp 4 million (US$1,818)
\nto Rp 7 million each, while duplicated ones can be bought for
\nonly Rp 1 million to Rp 2 million each.<\/p>\n
The duplicated hand phones are usually sold secretly, person
\nto person, in places such as bars, discotheques and pubs.<\/p>\n
Nurfaizi warned consumers that, as well as counterfeiting
\nhand phones, buying duplicated hand phones is also a crime.<\/p>\n
\"People should buy hand phones from the official agents of
\ncompanies, which hold radio cellular communication system rights,
\nand not from duplicators,\" Nurfaizi said.<\/p>\n
The government has appointed four companies -- Telkomsel,
\nSatelindo, Ratelindo and Komselindo -- to operate radio cellular
\ncommunication systems and provide hand phones with official
\nserial numbers to costumers. (01)<\/p>",
