Four policemen fired in Papua<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Four police officers from the Jayapura
\ndistrict police precinct in Irian Jaya have been dismissed for
\nbeing absent for more than three consecutive months.<\/p>\n
The fired police officers were identified only by their ranks
\nand initials as Second Brig. Akbr, Second Brig. Es, First Brig.
\nMr and First Brig. Cv.<\/p>\n
Jayapura district police chief Adj. Comr. Totok Kasmiarto,
\nduring a military ceremony here on Monday, said that the measure
\nwas taken to discipline the policemen and as a warning to others.<\/p>\n
Totok declined to elaborate on the reasons for the sacking,
\nbut added: \"If someone wants to be a policeman in Irian Jaya, he
\nmust be tough and never complain about the severe lack of
\nfacilities and rough conditions here.\"<\/p>\n
About 1,000 police are stationed across the troubled province.<\/p>\n
Totok said the number was enough to patrol the 13,000
\nkilometer-wide region but the lack of transport facilities and
\nbad salaries had caused frustration among police officers. --JP<\/p>",
