        "content": "<p>Havana (ANTARA) - Four people were shot dead and six others injured\nby Cuban border guards on Wednesday morning as they entered Cuban waters\nin a US-registered speedboat, the country\u2019s interior ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the ministry said that the speedboat, with US Florida\nregistration number FL7726SH, was detected illegally sailing about one\nnautical mile east of the El Pino channel, north of Corralillo, a town\nin the central Cuban province of Villa Clara.<\/p>\n<p>As a surface unit of the border guard approached to identify the\nboat, the passengers on board opened fire, injuring a Cuban commander,\nit added.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry reaffirmed Cuba\u2019s commitment to protecting its\nterritorial waters, citing national defence as a pillar of sovereignty\nand regional stability.<\/p>\n<p>US Senator Marco Rubio said the US was investigating the shooting,\nbut was so far relying on the Cuban government to provide information\nabout what happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we have gathered more information, we will be ready to respond\nappropriately,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if the incident involved US government personnel or was a US\ngovernment operation, Rubio replied, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The shooting comes amid rising tensions between the US and Cuba. Last\nJanuary, after US forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro,\nWashington took control of Venezuelan oil exports and blocked shipments\nto Cuba. The US government also threatened to impose tariffs on goods\nfrom countries that supply oil to the island, deepening Cuba\u2019s economic\ncrisis.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) under the US Department\nof the Treasury said on Wednesday that it would allow the resale of\nVenezuelan-origin oil to the non-governmental sector in Cuba, although\nthe supply is still expected to be far short of meeting the country\u2019s\nneeds.<\/p>",
