Four men wanted over armed heist still at large<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): Police were continuing efforts to track down
\nfour armed men driving a metallic gray Kijang van as of late
\nyesterday for their role in a daylight robbery that seriously
\nwounded three people.<\/p>\n
\"We have put our officers on alert and coordinated a pursuit
\ntogether with other police precincts,\" Tangerang Police Chief Lt.
\nCol. Pudji Hartanto told The Jakarta Post last night.<\/p>\n
According to Pudji, the robbers used a bogus plate number of B
\n2745 JN.<\/p>\n
\"We have checked the number, and it turned out to be a fake,
\nsince the number belonged to a (Suzuki) Jimny car. We tried to
\nmatch it with the letter ZN, but still another car showed up in
\nthe computer,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The thieves allegedly sped off with Rp 31 million in cash
\nyesterday after shooting two Bank Bukopin employees at Kilometer
\n32.4 of the Sediyatmo toll road as they were taking two safety
\nboxes to the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.<\/p>\n
The gang also shot an ojek (motorcycle taxi) driver who
\nattempted to block their escape.<\/p>\n
Police have collected at least five spent cartridges and a
\nprojectile from the scene of the crime.<\/p>\n
\"The robbers probably used a .45 FN gun. We believe they're
\nalso armed with several sharp weapons, such as sickles and
\nmachetes,\" Pudji added.<\/p>\n
Witnesses and the preliminary police investigation indicated
\nthat the robbery took place at 9:10 a.m. under a flyover adjacent
\nto the airport's main exit gate.<\/p>\n
Bank Bukopin security guard Sugandi Prasetyo, 39, bank
\nemployee Winarti Rahayu, 31, and driver Purnawan, 35, were
\ndriving to the airport in a bank-owned green Kijang van when they
\nwere forced to stop by the robbers.<\/p>\n
\"We were taking money from our branch in Slipi, West Jakarta,
\nto our branch at the airport,\" recalled Purnawan, who survived
\nthe incident unscathed.<\/p>\n
\"Suddenly, a Kijang tried to push our vehicle from the right
\nlane, forcing us to pull over. They hit the right side of our car
\nand eventually we stopped,\" he said.<\/p>\n
One of the robbers, Purnawan said, then broke the front left
\nwindow of the bank car and took the two cash boxes.<\/p>\n
\"Sugandi jumped out of the car and tried to run for help. He
\nwas about to get into a taxi when one of the criminals spotted
\nhim and shot him in his right leg.\"<\/p>\n
Winarti was shot in her left leg while trying to run away.
\n\"And the robbers just took off,\" Purnawan added.<\/p>\n
A shaken Winarti told reporters that she could not clearly
\nremember what the robbers looked like.<\/p>\n
\"I was busy trying to escape ... I was scared to death,\" she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Pudji said the robbers exited the toll road and headed to Jl.
\nHusen Sastranegara, where a group of ojek drivers, who saw the
\nincident, tried to chase and block their way.<\/p>\n
\"The first ojek driver, Tamzir, tried to chase the robbers.
\nBut when he pulled up to the left side of the car, one of the
\ncrooks opened fire and hit his motorcycle battery.<\/p>\n
\"The second ojek driver, Nazrudin, took a short cut and got
\nnear the right side of the robbers' van.<\/p>\n
\"But again the crooks opened fire and this time the bullet hit
\nNazrudin's left hip,\" Pudji explained.<\/p>\n
The robbers then fled to the Kalideres area, the officer said.<\/p>\n
Sugandi was treated at Tangerang General Hospital, Winarti in
\nHonoris Tangerang Hospital and Nazrudin, 25, in Pluit Hospital,
\nNorth Jakarta.<\/p>\n
According to Pudji, the robbers had followed the bank van for
\nsome time.<\/p>\n
\"They were very quick and cruel in carrying out their
\noperation,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Judging from the newly begun investigation, the robbers may
\nhave been connected to several previous armed robberies in
\nJakarta, he added.<\/p>\n
When asked to comment on the robbery, City Police Chief Maj.
\nGen. Noegroho Djajoesman, who also supervises the Tangerang area,
\nsaid he would soon set up a special team of detectives to track
\ndown the armed robbers.<\/p>\n
Police have created several special teams in an effort to curb
\nthe crime rate in the greater Jakarta area. The move, however,
\nhas not stopped many criminals from preying on businesses and
