Four firms probed over forest fires<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: State Minister for the Environment Nabiel
\nMakarim said on Tuesday that government investigators were still
\ninvestigating four companies allegedly involved in the burning of
\nforest areas for land clearance in Riau province.<\/p>\n
The four, he revealed, were PT Multi Gambut Industri, PT Musi
\nMas, PT Bukit Kapur Reksa and PT Inti Prona.<\/p>\n
He expected the cases would be brought to court to serve as a
\nwarning to other forest concessionaires.<\/p>\n
He said that in many cases, the courts released wrongdoers due
\nto the judges poor knowledge of environmental law.<\/p>\n
The latest such case was the release of the owner of oil palm
\nplantation PT Jatim Jaya Perkasa by the Dumai District Court
\ndespite the existence of strong evidence supporting the charges
\nthat the company had intentionally set fires in its concession in
\nthe province.<\/p>\n
\"The provincial legislative council will ask the judges to
\nexplain their ruling,\" he told reporters after holding a closed-
\ndoor dialog with the provincial authorities in the city.<\/p>\n
As of Monday, a satellite image showed 71 hot spots in the
\nforest fire-prone province. --JP<\/p>",
