Four disco patrons imprisoned<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The West Jakarta District Court sentenced four
\ndiscotheque patrons yesterday an average of three months in
\nprison for consuming Ecstasy pills.<\/p>\n
The male defendants were identified as Erick Pariosa Setiawan,
\n20, and Asep Subhi, 18, and the females were Yulia Suryani Dewi,
\n28, and Sari Benah, 40.<\/p>\n
Erick, a university student, and Asep, a graduate from a
\ntechnical senior high school, were arrested at Parkir Discotheque
\non Jl. Mangga Besar on Aug. 23, while Yulia and Sari, a
\nhousewife, were arrested at Furama Discotheque on Jl. Hayam Wuruk
\non the same night.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Fadly Ilhamy said Erick, Asep and another man,
\nArsani, 19, were rounded up by policewomen and then taken to the
\nCity Police Headquarters.<\/p>\n
Fadly said the three young men were detained because their
\nurine tests, certified by forensic expert Mun'im Idries,
\nindicated they had recently consumed Ecstasy pills. Arsani,
\nhowever, was released after being detained for 20 days, but he
\npassed another test at the police forensics laboratory.<\/p>\n
Mun'im, who attended yesterday's court session as an expert
\nwitness, said that he had not yet received reports from the
\npolice that the result of Arsani's second urine test was
\nnegative.<\/p>\n
\"It's a bit impossible for any person to pass another test
\nafter failing in my test,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Fadly questioned Mun'im's involvement in the police raids
\nagainst patrons of discotheques in the city, quoting the
\nIndonesian Medical Association's statement that such involvement
\nwas unethical for doctors.<\/p>\n
Mun'im again said that his involvement did not violate the
\ndoctors' code of ethics, saying that forensic doctors' jobs are
\ndifferent from those of medical doctors.<\/p>\n
He said a forensic doctor examined evidence which could be
\nrevealed to the public while a medical doctor examined a patient
\nwhich should be kept confidential.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Suyitno earlier charged Asep and Erick under
\nArticle 60 (5) of Law No. 5\/1997 on psychotropic drugs, which
\ncarries a maximum prison sentence of three months for drug users.<\/p>\n
On Nov. 7, the Central Jakarta District Court sentenced 23
\npeople, including 13 women, to two months and 20 days in prison
\neach for taking Ecstasy pills.<\/p>\n
The 23 offenders were also arrested on Aug. 23 in a police
\nraid at Marimba Discotheque in Hotel Sentral on Jl. Pramuka.
