Four die in freak well accident<\/p>\n

Three men died in vain attempts to save the life of a fourth man
\nwho was overcome by poisonous fumes while trying to clean a well
\nin Bengkulu regency, Bengkulu province, it was reported on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
The cause of death of the victims from Karang Tinggi village,
\nKembang Seri subdistrict had not been determined, a local doctor
\ntold Antara news agency.<\/p>\n
The deceased were identified as Sulaiman Nasution, 25,
\nMarsalim, 35, Kasim, 25, and Supran, 45.<\/p>\n
The doctor, Mika, who heads the Karang Tinggi health community
\ncenter (Puskesmas), said Sulaiman was trying to pump water from
\nthe well, which had been contaminated by oil, outside his home.<\/p>\n
When the pump broke down, Sulaiman, assisted by Supran,
\nattempted to climb into the 10-meter-deep well, but slipped and
\nfell.<\/p>\n
Supran and then Marsalim and Kasim also climbed into the well
\nto rescue Sulaiman but also disappeared.<\/p>\n
The accident caused panic among other villagers, who could do
\nlittle to help.<\/p>\n
However, Dedi, another local, nearly became the fifth fatality
\nwhen he made a rescue attempt. A pale and weak Dedy was forced to
\nabandon his effort after climbing only a few meters down into the
\nwell.<\/p>\n
The villagers later reported the accident to local police, who
\nbrought in equipment to remove the bodies.<\/p>\n
The "deadly" well was closed by the police and residents were
\nbanned from approaching the surrounding area.<\/p>\n
