Four die during 'Takbiran' parades<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Four people died and two others were injured in
\ntraffic accidents during unofficial street parades marking the
\nTakbiran prayer celebration Thursday night.<\/p>\n
Two of the dead, identified as Zainuddin and Muftadi, were
\nkilled in a traffic accident in Cakung, East Jakarta. Another
\nvictim, Fahmi, died when his motorcycle crashed in Kebayoran
\nBaru, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Their bodies were sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital
\nin Central Jakarta for autopsies.<\/p>\n
Nana Maulana, 30, died after falling from a speeding Metromini
\nbus crowded with people. Reports said she was believed to have
\ndied instantly.<\/p>\n
Her body was taken to Sumber Waras Hospital in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Thousands of city residents, most of them youths, flocked the
\nstreets Thursday night in cars, motorcycles and trucks. They beat
\ntraditional bedug drums and chanted praise to Allah to mark the
\nend of the Ramadhan fasting month.<\/p>\n
Parades caused traffic jams in several areas, particularly
\nstreets around the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta
\nwhere President Soeharto led an official ceremony.<\/p>\n
The emergency unit at Fatmawati Hospital, South Jakarta, had
\nadmitted two patients who sustained injuries in parades by 2 a.m.
\nFriday morning.<\/p>\n
Sri Rahayu, 47, was involved in a car crash as she watched
\nparades near her house at the Bea Cukai housing complex near Jl.
\nFatmawati.<\/p>\n
Purnanini, 32, fell from a motorcycle during a parade.<\/p>\n
Many youths in the parades lit firecrackers, and some of them
\nthrew them at people in other vehicles.<\/p>\n
Although the authorities have banned the possession and use of
\nfirecrackers, City Police chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata said late
\nThursday that his personnel had not made any arrests involving
\nfireworks.<\/p>\n
\"We only warned them and asked them to stop playing with the
\nfirecrackers,\" he said. No arrests were made. Our security
\noperation emphasized more the humanity side, not tough measures.
\nAfter all, it's the holiday season.\"<\/p>\n
About 14,000 police officers were deployed in an operation
\ncode-named Ketupat to safeguard Idul Fitri festivities throughout
