Four buses to be provided for Tangerang students<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): The Tangerang administration is planning to
\nprovide four special buses to accommodate students who have been
\ncomplaining of a lack of transportation.<\/p>\n
Tangerang Mayor Djakaria Machmud said the Tangerang
\nLegislative Council has approved the plans.<\/p>\n
Speaking after inducting Musholien Harjono as the new chairman
\nof the Tangerang Post Office on Saturday, Djakaria said the
\nnumber (of the buses) may be inadequate and thus asked for
\npatience.<\/p>\n
\"It's only an initial step. We hope that private
\ntransportation companies will also think about providing buses
\nespecially for students,\" Djakaria said.<\/p>\n
The mayor attributed this problem in part to the \"reluctance\"
\nof bus drivers to carry students because they are only paid half
\nof the normal fare.<\/p>\n
Two of the four buses will be deployed to serve students along
\nJl. Perintis Kemerdekaan, Cikokol, where there are 12 schools at
\nthe moment.<\/p>\n
According to the head of the Tangerang education and culture
\noffice, H. Warsa, at present there are around 80,000 junior high
\nschool (SMP) and high school (SMA) students in Tangerang.<\/p>\n
Thousand of students living in Tangerang are stranded every
\nday at bus shelters waiting for buses to take them home.<\/p>\n
Many are then forced to walk down the streets for kilometers
\nbecause the buses fail to turn up. Even if they do appear, many
\nbus drivers seem unwilling to stop for them.<\/p>\n
\"If we opt for students we will not be able to pay our rental
\nfees. So I'd rather choose passengers who are not students,\"
\nTutur Suryadi, one of the drivers, told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Due to a lack of public transportation vehicles, students are
\nfrequently forced to ride in trucks or other private vehicles,
\nwhich force the students to jump from the moving vehicles when
\nthey want to get off.<\/p>\n
Stranded students also tend to gather in large numbers, which
\noften results in brawls.<\/p>\n
Teguh Setiawan, who passes the area on his way to work
\neveryday said it is horrifying to see such large numbers of
\nstranded students.<\/p>\n
A number of teachers and headmasters whose students face
\ndifficulties in transportation share Teguh's view. \"We can still
\ncontrol them in schools. But outside the school complexes, it is
