Four arrested in vehicle testing scam<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The authorities have arrested four people
\nsuspected of collecting unauthorized fees from vehicle owners at
\nthe vehicle testing center in Ujungmenteng, East Jakarta, an
\nofficial said yesterday.<\/p>\n
JP Sepang, head of the City Land Transportation and Traffic
\nControl Agency (DLLAJ), said that two of the four suspects were
\nofficials of his agency and that the other two were brokers.<\/p>\n
"Three of the suspects have already admitted their involvement
\nin the collection of unauthorized fees. The other one is still
\nbeing interrogated by the police," he said.<\/p>\n
"A special team from the City Police and the Jakarta branch of
\nthe National Stability Coordinating Agency (Bakorstanasda) has
\nalready been formed to handle this problem...<\/p>\n
"If the two DLLAJ officials are found guilty, I will report
\nthem directly to the governor, who will later make a decision on
\nwhat penalty they will receive," Sepang said.<\/p>\n
He said that the operation against the corrupt practices
\nalleged was conducted after the publication of news reports that
\nmany brokers were operating in the vehicle testing center in
\ncooperation with DLLAJ officials.<\/p>\n
Their operation had reportedly increased the total fees for
\nvehicle testing by up to 400 percent. Truck owners, for example,
\nfor whom the official fee is Rp 20,000, had been forced to pay Rp
\n70,000, according to the reports.<\/p>\n
Commenting on reports that 30 DLLAJ officials had recently
\nbeen dismissed, Sepang said that the dismissal had nothing to do
\nwith the arrest of the suspects.<\/p>\n
"It's just a routine rotation at the agency," he said.<\/p>\n
"I just follow the governor's instructions about the rotation
\nof the officers every five years." (31)<\/p>",
