Four admirals proposed for Navy chief<\/p>\n

The Navy has proposed four three-star admirals as candidates
\nto replace Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Bernard Kent Sondakh, who
\nreached his mandatory retirement age of 55 two years ago.<\/p>\n
The four admirals are Vice adm. I Wayan Rampeh Argawa, the
\ncurrent Navy deputy chief of staff; Vice. Adm. Slamet Subianto,
\nthe deputy governor of the National Resilience Institute
\n(Lemhannas); Vice Adm. Sumardjono, the commander of the Staff and
\nCommand College in Bandung; and Vice Adm. Djoko Sumarjono, the
\ncurrent secretary of the Office of Coordinating Minister for
\nPolitical, Legal and Security Affairs.<\/p>\n
"I have proposed names of the candidates on the shortlist to
\nfill the Navy's top post. I, however, will not interfere in the
\nselection process," said Bernard.<\/p>\n
He said that the decision would be made by the Indonesian
\nMilitary (TNI) Commander Gen. General Endriartono Sutarto.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ryamizard Ryacudu also said
\nthat he had prepared three names, including two of its three-star
\ngenerals, to replace him.<\/p>\n
Ryamizard declined to name the generals, but some have
\nsuggested that his deputy, Lt. Gen. Djoko Santoso, or the
\nincumbent commander of the Army's Strategic Reserves Command
\n(Kostrad) Lt. Gen. Hadi Waluyo, would be the strongest candidates
\nfor the Army's top post.<\/p>\n
Rumors over a planned reshuffle affecting all three chiefs of
\nstaff have been rife since President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's
\nannouncement that he would replace Endriartono this month.<\/p>\n
Law No. 34\/2004 stipulates that the President can only propose
\nsenior officers -- who have held a position at least as high as a
\nchief of staff -- to the House of Representatives as candidates
\nfor the TNI Commander.<\/p>\n
Apart from the Navy and Army chiefs of staff, the current Air
\nForce chief Marshall Chappy Hakim has also reached his mandatory
\nretirement age in 2003, although the president extended his term
\nof service.<\/p>\n
Chappy, however, has yet to disclose any names for his likely
\nsuccessor.<\/p>\n
Citing regeneration among the military, Ryamizard is
\nconsidered the strongest candidate to replace Endriartono,
\nbecause he is the youngest among the military chiefs of staff.
\nRyamizard will be 55 in April of this year, but the President can
\nextend his term of service for another five years.<\/p>\n
One source, however, has said that the TNI headquarters has
\ndecided to replace all of the chiefs of staff before replacing
\nthe TNI Commander.<\/p>",
