        "content": "<p>Foundation protests workers' shooting<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: The Legal Aid Foundation here has demanded that the<br>\nmilitary police account for the shooting of striking workers of a<br>\nplywood plant on Friday. This shooting led to 12 strikers being<br>\nhospitalized for bullet wounds, a statement made available to The<br>\nJakarta Post said.<\/p>\n<p>The Foundation on Monday quoted a report from the Legal Aid<br>\nOffice in Semarang that all the victims were demonstrating<br>\nworkers of PT Kayu Lapis Indonesia who were fired on at around 6<br>\np.m. by members of the mobile brigade after the latter issued<br>\nwarning shots.<\/p>\n<p>Victims are still being treated at the Romani hospital in<br>\nSemarang, the capital of Central Java.<\/p>\n<p>However the Foundation could only identify seven victims: Agus<br>\nIman, Munaroh, Mahmudi, Miskon, Haryadi, Widodo and Mahmud.<\/p>\n<p>The Foundation said it was unacceptable for the police unit to<br>\nshoot at random, \"ignoring standards for the use of force and<br>\nwithout a sense of humanity toward workers demanding better<br>\nwelfare peacefully and democratically.\"<\/p>\n<p>The involvement of the police unit \"cannot be separated from<br>\nthe policy of the Coordinating Agency for National Stability and<br>\nSecurity (Bakorstranas)... on military intervention in labor<br>\ndisputes,\" which should stop, the Foundation statement signed by<br>\ncoordinator Teten Masduki said.<\/p>\n<p>The workers' demands including a 40 percent hike in wages were<br>\nreasonable, Teten said, given today's living costs, inflation and<br>\nthe low regional wage increase.<\/p>",
