Foundation protests workers' shooting<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Legal Aid Foundation here has demanded that the
\nmilitary police account for the shooting of striking workers of a
\nplywood plant on Friday. This shooting led to 12 strikers being
\nhospitalized for bullet wounds, a statement made available to The
\nJakarta Post said.<\/p>\n
The Foundation on Monday quoted a report from the Legal Aid
\nOffice in Semarang that all the victims were demonstrating
\nworkers of PT Kayu Lapis Indonesia who were fired on at around 6
\np.m. by members of the mobile brigade after the latter issued
\nwarning shots.<\/p>\n
Victims are still being treated at the Romani hospital in
\nSemarang, the capital of Central Java.<\/p>\n
However the Foundation could only identify seven victims: Agus
\nIman, Munaroh, Mahmudi, Miskon, Haryadi, Widodo and Mahmud.<\/p>\n
The Foundation said it was unacceptable for the police unit to
\nshoot at random, \"ignoring standards for the use of force and
\nwithout a sense of humanity toward workers demanding better
\nwelfare peacefully and democratically.\"<\/p>\n
The involvement of the police unit \"cannot be separated from
\nthe policy of the Coordinating Agency for National Stability and
\nSecurity (Bakorstranas)... on military intervention in labor
\ndisputes,\" which should stop, the Foundation statement signed by
\ncoordinator Teten Masduki said.<\/p>\n
The workers' demands including a 40 percent hike in wages were
\nreasonable, Teten said, given today's living costs, inflation and
\nthe low regional wage increase.<\/p>",
