Jakarta \u2013 Ishfah Abidal Aziz (IAA), commonly known as Gus Alex, a\nformer special staff member to the Minister of Religious Affairs, has\nbeen detained by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), following\nthe detention of former Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil\nQoumas.<\/p>\n
Gus Alex was detained after being designated as a suspect in the hajj\nquota corruption case alongside Yaqut.<\/p>\n
\u201cI respect the legal process that is currently underway,\u201d stated Gus\nAlex at the KPK\u2019s Red and White Building in Jakarta on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He went on to say that he had already provided extensive statements\nto KPK investigators and expressed hope of obtaining justice.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully, we can find justice and the truth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The KPK initiated an investigation into the alleged corruption case\nrelated to Indonesia\u2019s hajj quota for 2023-2024 on 9 August 2025.<\/p>\n
On 11 August 2025, the KPK announced that preliminary calculations of\nstate financial losses in the case reached over Rp1 trillion, and\nimposed overseas travel restrictions on three individuals for up to six\nmonths. These individuals were Yaqut, Ishfah Abidal Aziz (Gus Alex) as\nYaqut\u2019s staff member, and Fuad Hasan Masyhur, the owner of the hajj\norganising bureau Maktour.<\/p>\n
On 9 January 2026, the KPK announced that two of the three\nindividuals subject to travel restrictions had become suspects in the\nalleged hajj quota corruption case: Yaqut and Gus Alex.<\/p>\n
However, Yaqut filed a pre-trial motion challenging his designation\nas a suspect with the South Jakarta District Court on 10 February 2026,\nregistered under case number 19\/Pid.Pra\/2026\/PN JKT.SEL.<\/p>\n
On 19 February 2026, the KPK announced an extension of overseas\ntravel restrictions for Yaqut and Gus Alex only, whilst Fuad\u2019s\nrestriction was not extended.<\/p>\n
On 27 February 2026, the KPK announced it had received an audit from\nthe State Audit Board (BPK) regarding state financial losses resulting\nfrom the hajj quota case. Subsequently, on 4 March 2026, the KPK\nannounced that state financial losses from the case had reached Rp622\nbillion.<\/p>\n
On 11 March 2026, the South Jakarta District Court panel of judges\nrejected Yaqut\u2019s pre-trial motion.<\/p>\n
