Former KONI candidate calls for clean poll<\/p>\n

Joko Pramono, a onetime candidate for the National Sports Council
\n(KONI)'s chairmanship, has called for a clean and transparent
\nelection process this time around.<\/p>\n
\"I'd like to warn the election committee to be sportsmanlike.
\nNo fabrications,\" Joko, who heads the National Water Ski
\nAssociation (POSI), said at the Century Hotel here on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"This is important because it has to do with the future of
\nnational sports. Leave the issue to the participants of the
\ncongress,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The three-day KONI congress, which begins here on Tuesday,
\nwill feature representatives from 50 KONI-affiliated sports
\norganizations and 29 KONI provincial chapters.<\/p>\n
Joko, a retired Navy officer, was a strong candidate to
\nreplace incumbent KONI chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar in 1997,
\nonly to bow out of the race citing pressure. Wismoyo was
\neventually elected for a second term.<\/p>\n
With Wismoyo's time in the chair coming to an end, seven
\ncandidates have emerged to succeed him.<\/p>\n
The candidates are Arie Sudewo, Agum Gumelar, Luhut Panjaitan
\nand Sutiyoso, who, like Wismoyo, are all retired Army generals.
\nThere is also legislator Oesman Sapta Odang, Iskandar Zulkarnain
\nand Andhy Gani Nena Wea.<\/p>\n
\"All seven must be give an equal opportunity to present their
\nvision at the congress, regardless of whether or not they have
\nalready obtained an initial 10 backers as required by the
\ncommittee,\" Joko said, who was accompanied by Andhy Gani Nena
\nWea.<\/p>\n
The backers can be sports organizations or KONI's provincial
\nchapters.<\/p>\n
Andhy, who is the chairman of the Indonesian Sports Community,
\nsaid the number of backers should not have a bearing on the
\nelection.<\/p>\n
\"They may change allegiances during the congress, so it is the
\nsession that counts,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Andhy said he had the support of a few backers but he would
\nnot name the organizations or the chapters.<\/p>",
