Brussels (ANTARA) - Former Irish President Mary Robinson has called\nfor the enforcement of international law without \u201cdouble standards\u201d,\nsharply comparing the fierce criticism of Russia over the Ukraine war\nwith the weaker response to US and Israeli attacks on Iran.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Sky News on Friday, Robinson stressed the importance of\nglobal accountability, stating that countries must speak out against\nviolations no matter who commits them.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is very important for other countries to speak out, because we\nneed to support the supremacy of international law. It is one of\nhumanity\u2019s greatest achievements, and we need to preserve it, and\ntherefore we do not want to have double standards,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Robinson pointed to the strong international response following the\nstart of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine, contrasting it with what she described\nas a weaker reaction to recent actions by the US and Israel targeting\nIran.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are seeing aggression now by the United States and Israel against\nIran, which is not justified in the UN Charter, which is illegal, and\nvery few countries are explicitly talking about it. They are trying to\navoid it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Highlighting diplomatic efforts, she noted that Oman\u2019s foreign\nminister had spoken \u201cvery clearly\u201d about ongoing negotiations, including\nwhat he described as a \u201cnew and substantive\u201d proposal from Iran.<\/p>\n
\u201cInstead of continuing with that, suddenly there is an unjustified\nmilitary attack under international law, and governments must be\nprepared to speak out about it,\u201d Robinson said.<\/p>\n
Since Israel and the US launched a joint attack on Iran on 28\nFebruary, which killed around 1,300 people, including Iran\u2019s then-top\nleader Ali Khamenei, hostilities have intensified.<\/p>\n
Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel,\nJordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets.<\/p>\n
