Former Irish President Mary Robinson has criticised what she sees as double standards in international responses to global conflicts, contrasting the strong condemnation of Russia's war in Ukraine with the muted reaction to recent US and Israeli attacks on Iran. She emphasised the need for consistent enforcement of international law, regardless of the perpetrators, to uphold global accountability. The attacks, which killed around 1,300 people including Iran's top leader Ali Khamenei, have escalated hostilities, with Iran retaliating against Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets.

Brussels (ANTARA) - Former Irish President Mary Robinson has called
for the enforcement of international law without “double standards”,
sharply comparing the fierce criticism of Russia over the Ukraine war
with the weaker response to US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

Speaking to Sky News on Friday, Robinson stressed the importance of
global accountability, stating that countries must speak out against
violations no matter who commits them.

“It is very important for other countries to speak out, because we
need to support the supremacy of international law. It is one of
humanity’s greatest achievements, and we need to preserve it, and
therefore we do not want to have double standards,” she said.

Robinson pointed to the strong international response following the
start of Russia’s war in Ukraine, contrasting it with what she described
as a weaker reaction to recent actions by the US and Israel targeting
Iran.

“We are seeing aggression now by the United States and Israel against
Iran, which is not justified in the UN Charter, which is illegal, and
very few countries are explicitly talking about it. They are trying to
avoid it,” she said.

Highlighting diplomatic efforts, she noted that Oman’s foreign
minister had spoken “very clearly” about ongoing negotiations, including
what he described as a “new and substantive” proposal from Iran.

“Instead of continuing with that, suddenly there is an unjustified
military attack under international law, and governments must be
prepared to speak out about it,” Robinson said.

Since Israel and the US launched a joint attack on Iran on 28
February, which killed around 1,300 people, including Iran’s then-top
leader Ali Khamenei, hostilities have intensified.

Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel,
Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets.

Source: Anadolu
",
